The Hornby Spark Society

A vibrant, non-hierarchical Makerspace situated in the historical Fire Hall on Hornby Island.

In 2017 Hornby Island community members came together to save and repurpose a community asset that was designed for demolition. Out of consultation and grass roots activism, committed community members established and incorporated the The Hornby Spark Society. “The Spark” serves as a vibrant makerspace housed in Hornby’s historic Fire Hall on Central Road. This dynamic organization embodies in its origin and activities the ethos of our self-reliant community.

Makerspaces foster collaboration, creativity, and innovation, while imagining new ways of addressing material consumption and the economy. The Hornby Spark promotes an inclusive, empowering environment that nurtures the transformative potential of its community.

At the core of the Hornby Spark's ethos is the belief that engaging in the process of creation, repair, and modification signifies a profound form of accountability for our community’s future. Through active participation in The Spark, individuals not only address tangible issues but also cultivate opportunities for radical sustainability and resistance against oppressive consumerism.

The Hornby Spark recognizes the innate human desire to craft, innovate, and problem-solve. By embracing our inherent maker identities, we can resist the allure of the disposable economy and instead forge a path towards self-sufficiency and sustainable happiness.

Through providing access to tools, equipment, and spaces for unbridled creativity, the Hornby Spark champions the fundamental human right to create, innovate, and reimagine. In doing so, it holds the potential to alter the prevailing trajectory, catalyzing a paradigm shift towards a more equitable and sustainable future.
